Finally making public the documentary I shot & directed with Róisín Murphy. We spent time with some of the biggest The Darkness fans to find out about their relationship with the band.

We also spoke with frontman Justin Hawkins about how he feels about the relationship that develops between a band and his fans and he affects him and his work…

Apart from my video and film work I am a researcher of fandom and celebrity. After completing this documentary I went on to do a Masters and specialised in the relationship between fans & celerbrities. I learnt a lot doing this documentary, despite its imperfections, I’m proud of this piece of work. Even if one person gets something out of watching it, that’ll make me smile.

I can always count on getting a gem shot of Frankie Poullain from The Darkness. What a pro.

The Darklings Documentary - Promo Video

So, this the video we had to present during our final year thesis presentations, to show our progress during the documentary making.

It’s kind of a little promo video, but just shows some clips of us meeting different Darklings [The Darkness fans], Justin Hawkins the frontman of the band, myself and Róisín my documentary partner in crime roaming around the UK.

Róisín put it together back in March to give a taste of what we were upto.

Feel free to share it. I’m going to see whether we will enter the documentary into a festival or share it online to the public. I’ll keep you posted!

Outtake from my thesis documentary; backstage with Justin Hawkins in The Olympia Theatre after The Darkness played in Dublin. Trying to prevent my flitting eyes when interviewing. It’s tough! First interview of the documentary, so it was all bit nerve wrecking, being in front of the camera is not my strong point.
I’ll post a few more outtakes from the others involved in it over the next week! It’ll be available in June to be seen…if it gets the all clear of course.

The cover sleeve of my first documentary; this was made as part of my undergraduate degree. It’ll be available to watch in June, possibly not completely public but if anyone wants to see it just drop a message.
It’s about the relationship betweens fans and celebrities or in this case musicians/bands, the case study being The Darklings - fans of The Darkness!

The Darklings: the fans behind the band.

Yep, that is my thesis film documentary. Let’s hope it kicks ass gets the first class honours degree I want. It’s odd seeing your work all done up as a proper looking DVD.
I have a lot of people to thank for making it happen and the co-operation of lovely people. It was just shot with me and my documentary partner Róisín Murphy.
Now to start development on the next doc, I’ve gotten the bug!
Wouldn’t mind doing another music style documentary, once you start you realise how you can make things even better which is the main thing to take from any project.

NEVER let your interviewees wear striped black tops when you’re filming them. It is the one pattern when worn indoors gives this bizarre optical illusion effect on screen as though their clothes are moving. It’s called moirée.
I would like to take this time to thank Mr. Karl and Mr. Justin here for both wearing stripy tops in the documentary.
